  1. Guidelines
We meet on every two weeks on a Monday.  Meeting time at the start of the day
10.00 am, ready  to leave.  It is important that everyone is punctual. If something happens on the journey to the meeting point please phone Esme on her mobile phone  (0775 110  9222).  We will not wait more than 5 min. after 10.00am unless phoned

Please phone Esme ( 01508 537193) the previous day if you cannot walk or before 8.00am on the morning of the walk.

We trust the maps and sign posts, as it is not possible to test out the walks beforehand. However car parking at the start and end of each walk is checked to ensure enough space for the entire group to park safely.

Dogs are allowed to join the walks if kept under control and members of the group are happy with their inclusion. Please remember your dog lead and a pooh bag. Dogs should be on a lead and if an extending lead is used care must be taken, as it can be very annoying if walkers continually have to dodge the dogs trailing lead. When the group is eating or drinking dogs should be a reasonable distance from the group.

  1. Travel
When walks are not circular, we all meet at the end of the walk and use as many cars as needed to get everyone to the starting point of the walk. At the end of the walk two or three cars are needed to return drivers to the start of the walk to collect their cars.

We need a minimum of 4 cars to make transport work.

  2. Bad Weather
Cancellation of a walk will only be in the event of
    extreme weather.
Esme will start a round robin phone call by 7.00a.m. to say the walk has been cancelled. The phone list will be up dated from time to time. Please check you use the most recent list. Each member once called must
immediately phone the next person on the list to ensure the cancellation message to all walkers has been completed by 8.00a.m. If you cannot connect with your contact number phone the next person on the list and let Esme know who has not been told.  Last name on the list please call Esme to confirm completion of the round robin.
If in doubt about cancellation check with Esme and Paul
    before 8.00a.m.

Please do remember to call Esme on or before SUNDAY if you know you cannot do a walk.  If you have to cancel at the last moment on the Monday please phone by 7.30 latest.  THANK YOU

  3. Equipment needed
Walking boots  (bag for muddy boots after walk when traveling in cars!) Water proofs, hat and gloves for cold weather, sun glasses, sun hat and insect repellent for hot weather. Small basic first aid. Packed lunch and water. (OS map of the area can be helpful.)

  4. Dog owners
Dog lead, dog pooh bag and towel.

U3A has insurance cover for the group. See the U3A programme.

  5. Costs. From time to time Esme will have expenses. i.e. handouts, postage and petrol to check out parking in advance of walks. She will ask as and when money is needed. Notices will be sent via Email where possible

  6. Refreshments
We stop for a coffee & a lunch break on all our walks.  It is therefore a good idea to bring drinks & refreshments for these stops as we are usually in the countryside away from  Pubs or cafes.

  7. U3A members only
Only paid-up U3A members are allowed to attend the walks.  The only exception to this is that members may bring a partner or friend on a Bank holiday walk. But they MUST check with the walk leader beforehand to see if they can be included.

  8. Walks Disclaimer
Walking is one of the healthiest and safest of Outdoor Activities. However, neither the Norwich U3A, nor the Walk Leader/Organiser of the walk(s) has control of the environment of the walks, the weather, any animals or indeed of any of the walkers themselves, and whilst taking normal precautions, providing reasonable help and assistance as necessary, they cannot accept responsibility for any circumstances affecting the Health or Safety of the Walkers in the party.

Walks organised by U3A Groups automatically receive Public Liability insurance cover, provided the leaders are U3A members, through the Third Age Trust. This is designed to protect leaders against claims for damage to property and for injury or death which might have been occasioned on the walk. This is NOT a personal accident insurance and accordingly participants on walks are responsible for their own Health and Safety and the safe keeping of their equipment, clothing and belongings. Children are not permitted on U3A walks.

Participants on Walks should follow the advice/instructions of the Walk Leader in order to minimise any risk to themselves and should also ensure that they do not endanger any others in the party.

All participants of  U3A walks should  read, understand and accept the foregoing Disclaimer.

  9. PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED IN THE EVENT OF A WALK CANCELLATION - WALK LEADERS WILL CANCEL WHEN ESME IS AWAY

Cancellation of a walk will only occur in the event of extreme weather.
Esme (or if she is away, the walk leader) will initiate a Round Robin phone call by 7.00a.m. on Monday of the walk-  to cancel. In very extreme weather conditions such a decision may be made earlier.

Each member once called must immediately phone the next person on the list. If you cannot contact that person leave a message on their answer phone and then phone the following person on the list so that the round robin continues. If they are out leave yet a second message and call the next person on the list. Continue this procedure until you actually talk to a fellow walker.

Equally importantly -  phone Esme (or if she is absent the walk leader of the day) and say which persons you have been unable to talk to on whose answer phones you have left a message. (Esme/walk leader will then do their best to ensure those people received the message by networking between friends)

The last named person on the list please must call Esme to confirm completion of the round robin.
Please ensure you use the most recent contact list as it is up-dated from time to time.

As a back up system, Esme / or the walk leader will post out an emergency e-mail on the morning of the walk canceling the event. However this must not be used to shortcut the Round Robin phone system the success of which is vital to inform as many people as quickly as possible.

When Esme is away walk leaders will please follow this same protocol, then hopefully we will not have anyone turning up for a walk which has been cancelled due to bad weather.

If in doubt about cancellation check with Esme before 8.00a.m. on the day of the walk.
